The village of Great Shelford is situated about 4 miles south of Cambridge, England. There is evidence of human settlement here since prehistoric times, thought to be related to the supply of water from springs such as Nine Wells. By the time of the Domesday Book, The village was established and already named Scelford, meaning "shallow ford", and refering to a crossing place over the River Cam. Today it is one of Cambridgeshire's larger villages with a population of about 4000. For more information on the history of the Shelfords go to the History Page.
